Moran’s Mark Center legislation clears Congress

The Defense Authorization Bill cleared Congress Wednesday, and with it, so has Rep. Jim Moran’s legislation to hold the Pentagon responsible for fixing traffic congestion problems near Alexandria’s Mark Center.

The Senate and House passed the bill today after dropping a “don’t ask, don’t tell” provision .

Moran, D-Va., inserted a provision into the bill that would force the Army to submit a detailed plan to fund and construct traffic improvements around the Mark Center within 90 days.

The Army has until September 2011 to transfer thousands of defense workers to a new Mark Center facility, a move experts say will clog traffic at the already busy intersection of Seminary Road and Interstate 395.
