Trump: ‘I did not know’ about Trump Tower meeting

The president crowed Saturday about Michael Cohen’s lawyer, Lanny Davis, walking back reports about what President Trump knew about a 2016 meeting between campaign officials and a Kremlin-linked lawyer.

“Michaels Cohen’s attorney clarified the record, saying his client does not know if President Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting (out of which came nothing!),” said Trump in a tweet. “The answer is that I did NOT know about the meeting. Just another phony story by the Fake News Media!”

Cohen, Trump’s former personal attorney, pleaded guilty this week to tax evasion and campaign finance violations related to payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy playmate Karen McDougal. The charges came out of the probe by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian meddling in the election.

His attorney, Lanny Davis, said this week he could not confirm previous reports that Cohen had been present during a discussion with Trump and his son, Donald Trump Jr., about the meeting at Trump Tower to get political dirt on then-opponent Hillary Clinton.

Cohen said in his testimony before Congress last year he had did not know whether then-candidate Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting before it occurred.
