The Democratic National Committee is already running opposition research on over 20 potential Republican 2024 presidential candidates.
The DNC group led by Nick Bauer is gathering “oppo” on potential contenders such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, as well as more unconventional candidates such as Fox News host Tucker Carlson and Trump ally and pillow magnate Mike Lindell.
The effort, which according to a report started just weeks after President Joe Biden’s nomination, will focus both on the 2022 midterm elections as well as the 2024 presidential election.
“That’s a four-year project, that’s not a two-year project,” a DNC official said of the early opposition research.
DNC officials have been quiet about the plans, but they have acknowledged the 2024 race is already on their radar.
“To say that there’s some sort of small team that’s been tasked with 2024, that’s simply not accurate,” one official told Politico. “With that having been said though, the map is such that we have a huge opportunity here. It’s sort of a false choice, right? If you look at the top eight Senate targets, they perfectly overlap with eight of the likely battlegrounds for 2024.”
Other potential GOP targets for opposition research are reported to be Sens. Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, former Vice President Mike Pence, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The race for the GOP nomination may hinge on whether former President Donald Trump opts to make a third bid for the White House. Polling shows Trump with a large lead among GOP voters if the former president enters the fray, while DeSantis and Pence have emerged as preferences if Trump decides to stay out of the race.
