House Intelligence Committee member Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, said he believes some people will “end up in jail,” when it comes to the investigation of ties between the Trump administration and Russia.
Speaking with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Castro was responding in part to a new report that claims former Trump adviser Carter Page met with a Russian spy in 2013 and may have been targeted for recruitment.
“I wouldn’t be surprised after all of this is said and done that some people end up in jail,” he said. “What you see with Trump’s campaign is this constant picking up of more and more people who have all these strong Russia connections.”
However, when it comes to the recent reports that former national security adviser Susan Rice unmasked names of Trump transition members in intelligence reports, Castro was far cooler about the potential consequences.
Castro said he was under the impression that Rice, “was willing to be helpful.”
“I read from that obviously she has nothing to hide,” Castro continued. “She was doing her job legally and properly.”
The House Intelligence Committee met Tuesday to try and resume their investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election, despite being mired down recently in political fights over the intelligence documents first revealed by Committee Chairman Devin Nunes.
Despite the notion that the committee hopes to resume its investigation after the upcoming recess, Castro said he still believes that Chairman Nunes should recuse himself over ties to the White House and that a separate, independent investigation be created.
In the first open hearing held by the House Oversight Committee into Russian meddling, Castro questioned FBI Director James Comey whether it was possible that some intelligence leaks that had been reported in the media might have originated with the White House.
