Houston police arrest suspect after three officers shot

Houston police have taken a suspect into custody after three officers were shot and hospitalized, according to authorities.

Police said the male suspect was believed to have shot three Houston police officers before fleeing to a Lockwood, Texas home, where he barricaded himself. A standoff between the suspect and the police began around 8 p.m. local time, but the suspect was eventually arrested roughly 40 minutes later.

The three police officers were taken to the Memorial Hermann Medical Center and are reported to be in stable condition. Authorities said in the briefing that one police officer had been shot in the foot, another in the leg, and the third in the arm.

Houston Police chief Troy Finner said the officers were responding to a call from a home when the suspect left the building and got into a vehicle. A chase ensued, with the suspect eventually crashing his vehicle, according to the chief. When the three officers got out of their car, Finner said the suspect opened fire and shot the officers, fleeing the scene after he hijacked a white Mercedes.

“I want everybody, all our leaders, no more excuses, everybody take an active role and get intentional and do whatever you can do to fight gun violence,” Finner said during the briefing. “It’s not a difficult thing.”

The three officers will be placed on administrative leave once they are discharged from the hospital, police said in the briefing.
