Cuomo accepts 1,000 donated ventilators from China for New York coronavirus response

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that New York was accepting a 1,000-ventilator donation from China to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The New York governor announced that China, the novel coronavirus’s country of origin, is donating 1,000 ventilators to assist patients diagnosed with COVID-19. “This is a big deal, and it’s going to make a significant difference for us,” Cuomo said during a Saturday press briefing. Cuomo also revealed that Oregon will be donating an additional 140 ventilators to the state.

Cuomo issued thanks to the Chinese government, the Chinese consul general, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, and others for enabling New York to facilitate healthcare for patients.

“We have to figure out why we wound up in this situation, where we don’t have the manufacturing capacity in this country,” Cuomo said of the donation.

According to the New York Department of Health, over 113,000 state residents have tested positive for COVID-19, representing a large percentage of all cases in the United States. More than 1.1 million people have tested positive for the coronavirus globally. Of those, nearly 61,000 have died from it, and more than 233,000 have recovered. The U.S. has seen at least 278,000 confirmed cases, with over 7,000 deaths and nearly 10,000 reported recoveries.
