Baltimore County police are warning residents about a team of criminals claiming to represent BGE who ripped off an elderly Baltimore County couple.
The scammers collect cash from their victims for what is described as an overdue bill, police said.
Police describe the most recent case of the scam as follows: On Thursday morning an unknown woman called a 91-year-old man at home, saying she represented Baltimore Gas & Electric and that the man owed the company $1,000.
The man, who lives in the White Marsh area, said he did not have that much money, but agreed to pay $750. The woman said a BGE representative would be by within the hour to collect the money.
Soon after the call a man showed up, took $750 cash from the victim and left.
The victim then became suspicious and called BGE, which told him they had not sent a representative and that he should report the incident to the police immediately.
Investigators believe there may be similar cases in the Baltimore area and ask any residents who believe they may have been victimized to call to dial 911 immediately.
