Chesapeake school board approves provisions to protect trans rights

Under the newly revised policies from the Chesapeake school board, students will be allowed to dress in accordance with their gender identity and can join any organization regardless of biological sex, WTKR reports.

There will also be annual trainings for school mental health professionals to prepare them to approach topics related to gender, according to the report.

Teachers and administrators must now use preferred names and gender pronouns for all students. If other students, parents, or school staff don’t need to know about a student’s alternative gender-related preferences, then school personnel will not disclose the information, the report added. If students wish to change how they are referred to in school in accordance with their gender identity, they must submit a written request to the school’s principal.

In addition, the report said if there is a disagreement between students and parents or guardians over usage of preferred pronouns and gender identity, the principal will attempt to resolve the dispute.
