Gas prices have topped $4 a gallon in the District.
AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge says an average gallon of gas cost $4.003 in D.C. on Saturday, up from $3.999 on Friday. Nationally, gas prices are averaging $3.82 a gallon.
Five states — Alaska, California, Connecticut, Hawaii and Illinois — have also surpassed the $4 benchmark.
Gas in the District was averaging $3.70 a gallon a month ago and $2.98 a gallon a year ago.
In Maryland, gas averaged $3.81 a gallon Saturday, up from $3.56 a month ago and $2.84 a year ago.
In Virginia, the price Saturday was lower still, at $3.74 a gallon. Gas cost $3.48 a gallon last month and $2.78 last year in Virginia.
Business owners and others have bemoaned the rising gas prices, saying the high costs are hurting their profits and stalling the region’s economic recovery.
