Gray names health and human services deputy

D.C. Mayor Vince Gray has continued to fill out his cabinet with his appointment of Beatriz Otero to deputy mayor for Health and Human Services.

Otero comes to the position as the city faces dwindling resources to house a steadily increasing number of homeless residents. Late last year, the D.C. Council voted to only provide services to families that could prove they’re city residents as the city’s shelters stretched above their capacities.

Otero is widely known as an education advocate. She is a founding member of the D.C. Public Charter School Board. She is also the president and founder of CentroNia, which provides education services in multilingual D.C. neighborhoods.
