Sam Elliott apologizes for calling Oscar-winning Western ‘a piece of s***’

Actor Sam Elliott apologized for slamming the Oscar-winning film The Power of the Dog on Sunday, calling all of the actors involved in the film “brilliant.”

The 77-year-old actor discussed his initial comments on the film while promoting a television show, saying the film “struck a chord” with him and he appeared on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast to talk about “how I felt about the film.” He also said some of his criticisms of the movie “hurt people” and that he “felt terrible about that,” according to Deadline.

“I told the WTF podcaster [Maron] that I thought Jane Campion was a brilliant director, and I want to apologize to the cast of The Power of the Dog. Brilliant actors all,” Elliott declared. “And in particular Benedict Cumberbatch. I can only say that I’m sorry and I am. I am.”

The Western film veteran appeared on the podcast on Feb. 28 and said he did not like the film, calling it “a piece of s***.” Elliott criticized the look of the cowboys in the film for “running around in chaps and no shirts” and claimed the film had “all these allusions to homosexuality throughout the f***ing movie.”

Director Jane Campion responded to Elliott’s criticisms on March 11, saying, “He was being a bit of a B-I-T-C-H” and describing her film as “just another version” of the West, the Hollywood Reporter reported.
