Jury selected in teacher assault case

The jury that will decide the fate of a Maryland first-grade teacher accused of assaulting her students has been selected.

The 12 jurors and three alternates – six women and nine men — will hear the case of Susan L. Burke.

Burke faces 10 counts of second-degree assault in connection with the attacks, which court documents say took place between Aug. 30, 2010, and Jan. 6, 2011.

Burke, 36, was teaching at Greencastle Elementary School in Silver Spring at the time. She allegedly kicked, choked and punched the 6- and 7-year-old students.

Jury selection took place Monday morning in Montgomery County Circuit Court. Opening statements are scheduled for the afternoon, and prosecutors are expected to begin calling witnesses.

Burke was arrested in February.
