MSNBC viewers decry John Bolton forecasting ‘victory for Russia’

Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton told MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell that the current situation between Russia and Ukraine will be “a victory for Russia,” comparing President Joe Biden‘s actions to the would-be actions of a second-term President Donald Trump, and viewers protested his appearance on social media.

On Tuesday morning, Bolton said Biden admitted that “deterrence has failed.”

“I think Putin was undoubtedly waiting for a second Trump term, but he is getting effectively almost what he would have expected then. This is going to be a victory for Russia,” he said.

Mitchell pushed back on this, saying, “You think that what the Biden administration is doing, rallying the NATO allies—” when Bolton interjected, claiming, “It has failed. The president says it has failed.”

MSNBC viewers were unhappy, to say the least.

“John Bolton on @MSNBC right now. Andrea Mitchell is giving him a hard time. But…uh…really? John Bolton? Wasn’t Richard Grenell available?” one Twitter user wrote.

“MSNBC hosts John Bolton to criticize Biden’s handling of the Russia/Ukraine crisis. *Reminder:* John Bolton is a neo-con whose foreign policy has been consistently proven wrong. He was wrong about Iraq. He has been wrong about the Middle East. He was wrong about Afghanistan,” another wrote.

One user wrote, “I don’t want to hear John Bolton’s opinion on what we should be doing with Russia or anything for that matter.”

At a press briefing on Tuesday, Biden told reporters, “This is flagrant violation of international law.”

“Who in the Lord’s name does Putin think gives him the right to declare new so-called countries on territory that belongs to his neighbors?”

The president also announced a “first tranche” of sanctions against Russia. The sanctions will primarily target banks in the country, the elite, and Russia’s sovereign debt. Biden also announced that extra troops already stationed in Europe would be redeployed to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to strengthen NATO’s Baltic allies.
