Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich predicted Tuesday that presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump will announce his running mate selection on either Wednesday or Thursday, but pleaded ignorance regarding who Trump will ultimately select.
Gingrich told Fox News on Tuesday afternoon that he has “no idea” who Trump will pick, adding that the whole process is like “The Apprentice,” the show Trump hosted for 11 years.
“I don’t know much. My guess is you’re going to hear either tomorrow or Thursday — certainly no later than Friday, because they’re going to want to dominate the weekend news with the new vice presidential selection,” Gingrich told host Sandra Smith. “I have no idea who he’s going to pick.”
“Clearly, Gov. Pence is deeply involved in the running. I think Gov. Christie is still in the running and, you know, I’ve been part of the process. So we’ll see what happens over the next two or three days,” Gingrich said. “It’s a little bit like ‘The Apprentice’ — you find out sooner or later who the last one standing is.”
The former speaker said it would be “very hard” to turn down the opportunity to be Trump’s running mate, adding that the two most important factors for his running mate selection are readiness to be president and the ability to have chemistry with the candidate.
Not long before his appearance on Fox News, the network announced that Gingrich would not be serving as a contributor to the network to avoid any sort of conflict of interest, stoking chatter that he could very well be Trump’s pick. Gingrich has long been mentioned as a potential running mate for Trump, having campaigned with him last week in Cincinnati.
