Marjorie Taylor Greene blasts critics of ‘America First’ caucus

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene responded to criticism of reports of her planned “America First Caucus” on Saturday.

Greene rejected the media coverage of the caucus designed to praise “Anglo-Saxon political traditions,” calling those reporting on the planned political group “liars and psychotic left wing communists in the media who only care about self-awarded Pulitzers, clicks for cash, and pushing weak politicians around.”

“They released a staff level draft proposal from an outside group that I hadn’t read,” she said. “The scum and liars in the media are calling me a racist by taking something out of context. … It’s more proof so-called journalists lie and create false narratives.”

Greene said she had “plans” to “drive President Trump’s America First agenda with [her] Congressional colleagues” but declined to elaborate on the specifics.

“I believe in America First with all my heart and that means every American, of every race, creed, and color. … America First policies will save this country for all of us, our children, and ultimately the world,” she concluded.

On Friday, reports emerged that Greene was partnering with Rep. Paul Gosar to create an “America First Caucus” in the House that asserts the United States is “strengthened by a common respect for uniquely Anglo-Saxon political traditions.”

The proposal attracted backlash even from members within Greene’s own party, with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy obliquely pushing back on “nativist dog whistles” after reports of the planned caucus emerged.

“America is built on the idea that we are all created equal and success is earned through honest, hard work. It isn’t built on identity, race, or religion,” McCarthy wrote on Twitter. “The Republican Party is the party of Lincoln & the party of more opportunity for all Americans — not nativist dog whistles.”

Some took their criticism further, with Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a centrist known for being 1 of 10 members of the GOP to vote for former President Donald Trump’s impeachment earlier this year, calling for those who join the caucus to be stripped of their committee assignments.

“I believe anyone that joins this caucus should have their committees stripped, and the Republican conference should expel them from conference participation. While we can’t prevent someone from calling themselves Republican, we can loudly say they don’t belong to us,” Kinzinger tweeted.

A controversial member of the GOP caucus, Greene was herself stripped of her committee memberships for what House Democrats termed “reprehensible statements.”

“Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene must be held accountable for her reprehensible statements, and I am discussing with members the best course of action to do so,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, said shortly before the vote to remove the Georgia Republican from her committee assignments.

Still, strong support exists for Greene in some corners of the GOP. The freshman representative boasted impressive fundraising numbers during the first quarter of 2021, hauling in $3.2 million from over 100,000 donors during the January through March 2021 quarter.

“I stood my ground and never wavered in my belief in #AmericaFirst policies and putting #PeopleOverPolitics!” Greene said in a series of tweets while announcing the numbers. “The political ruling class fears the people because it’s the people that can take away what they love most. Power.”
