‘Sorry New York’: Twitter worries about NYC after de Blasio drops out

A number of trolls took to social media to express their concern for New York City after Mayor Bill de Blasio dropped out of the presidential race Friday morning.

The mayor’s decision to end his candidacy, which he announced during an appearance on Morning Joe, was not surprising considering he barely qualified for the first two debates and was left out of the one that was held earlier this month.

“I feel like I’ve contributed all I can to this primary election and it’s clearly not my time so I’m going to end my presidential campaign,” de Blasio said Friday.

Shortly after making the announcement, President Trump weighed in on Twitter, calling de Blasio a “part time mayor” and adding that he “was polling at a solid ZERO percent,” before tweeting that “NYC is devastated” because “he’s coming home!”

Trump was far from the only person to feign concern for the city because their mayor is coming back to assume his duties full time.

De Blasio, who was always viewed as a long shot candidate, did not have much support from his own city when he decided to enter the race in May. According to a Quinnipiac poll from a couple weeks prior to him announcing his candidacy, 76% of New York City residents did not want him to run for president, while “every listed party, gender, racial, borough and age group agrees that the mayor should not hit the campaign trail.”
