‘Small number’ of sailors on USS George H.W. Bush contract coronavirus

A small coronavirus outbreak was reported on a U.S. Navy ship in Virginia.

A Naval Air Force Atlantic spokeswoman confirmed on Thursday that a “small number” of sailors on the USS George H.W. Bush tested positive for the coronavirus and are now isolated in their homes in Virginia.

“There has been no impact to readiness,” said Cmdr. Jennifer Cragg in a statement. “The safety and welfare of our Sailors is our top priority.”

Cragg said the ship practices social distancing protocols, limits group gatherings, requires personnel to wear personal protective equipment, and regularly cleans its environment. She also added that the Norfolk Naval Shipyard conducts temperature checks and screenings.

The specific number of sailors were not publicly released, but all sailors with symptoms are referred for medical evaluation.
