Jill Stein files for recount in Pennsylvania

Former Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein officially filed for a recount in more than 100 of Pennsylvania’s 9,100 precincts Monday afternoon.

In a statement, Stein confirmed she filed for a recount after raising more than $6.5 million to fund efforts to challenge the results in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Stein had already filed for a recount in Wisconsin.

“Americans deserve a voting system we can trust,” Stein said. “After a presidential election tarnished by the use of outdated and unreliable machines and accusations of irregularities and hacks, people of all political persuasions are asking if our election results are reliable.”

“We must recount the votes so we can build trust in our election system,” she said. “We need to verify the vote in this and every election so that Americans of all parties can be sure we have a fair, secure and accurate voting system.”

Stein said about 137,000 donors have given an average of $46 since she started asking for donations to fund recount efforts in the three closely-contested states.

President-elect Trump won Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan by thin margins.

Stein has alleged that irregularities took place with the voting machines used to tabulate the votes and the ballots need to be recounted by hand. A Wisconsin commission has shot down her initial attempt to have a recount done by hand, but her lawyers have indicated they will try to get a court order to ensure the machines are not used for the recount.
