Obama Chairs His First Hearing

How thin is Barack Obama’s resume? Well, after tomorrow, no one will be able to say that he’s never chaired a Senate hearing before. Because while the subcommittee he chairs has still never met (who cares about ‘European Affairs’ anyway), he’s been given the honor of chairing the Senate hearing on the ambassadorial nominations to Finland, Slovenia, Cyprus and Bulgaria:

On Tuesday morning, Barack Obama , D-Ill., is scheduled to chair a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing where – among other things – senators are set to approve nominations for ambassadors to Finland, Slovenia, Cyprus and Bulgaria… Why him? At first glance, it might look like a reaction to Clinton’s campaign jabs. She’s been hounding him over his failure to hold any hearings of the European Affairs Subcommittee he chairs. Officially, though, it’s because the nominations hearings are grouped by areas of the world, and they’re always run by the panel chairman who deals with the relevant part of the world. In this case, all the nominations Tuesday morning relate to European countries, which are Obama’s specialty, according to Elizabeth Alexander, a spokeswoman for Foreign Relations Chairman Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware.

It’s good to know that Obama has a specialty. If something important issue ever emerges in U.S.-European affairs, surely we’ll be treated to a committee hearing that puts that expertise on display. The pity for Obama is that in his tenure as chairman, only trivial issues have emerged — things like the war on terror, homeland security, global warming, missile defense, the Doha round of trade talks, energy security — stuff like that. If something important pops up, Obama will have his chance to shine. Note: Senator Obama recently claimed to understand the world better than McCain or Clinton. It’s nice of him not to flaunt it.
