A purple velvet dress previously belonging to Princess Diana became the most expensive of her gowns to sell at auction Friday when it sold for more than $600,000.
The gown was a highlight of Sotheby’s New York auction and had at least four bidders battling over it, according to a report.

“Our Princess Diana Gown reached $604k, sealing its fate as the most valuable dress ever sold at auction,” it added.
When it finally sold for $604,800, it smashed the previous record holder, which belonged to Diana’s black off-the-shoulder gown.
That gown, which sold for $347,000 in 2019, became iconic after she wore it to the White House in 1985 and danced with actor John Travolta.
The late royal’s deep-purple velvet gown was designed by her longtime fashion collaborator, British dressmaker Victor Edelstein, according to the report.
Diana posed in the dress at a 1997 Vanity Fair photo shoot months before her death.
Following her death, it was sold off at a charity auction for $24,150.

Proceeds from that auction raised over $3 million for AIDS and cancer charities, according to the report.
