He’s taught at Fairfax County’s West Springfield High School for 31 years, and he’s authored three books. His social studies students score top-notch internships, and the Walt Disney Co. says he knows his social studies.
Now, James Percoco is being inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame. You go, James Percoco!
Just five teachers across the nation are inducted each year, and Percoco is the second to come out of FCPS (Linda White, an elementary music teacher, was inducted in 2006). Percoco learned of the honor at a surprise announcement at West Springfield on April 12.
This is not the first award for Percoco, who was named to the USA Today All-USA Teacher Team in 1998. He also received the Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of the Year award from the Walt Disney Company American Teachers Awards in 1993.
Percoco has worked with Russian educators to build an exchange program, led a delegation of history teachers to China, and served as an advisor to the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.
When he’s not enlightening FCPS students, Percoco is at American University, where he’s an adjunct professor of education and also serves as History Educator-in-Residence.
