The Prince George’s County Council approved extending the interim appointments of nine department heads on Thursday, including the county’s police and fire chiefs.
County Executive Rushern Baker asked the council to approve the appointments that would allow the officials to serve another four months while he is being “judicious” in finding permanent seat holders.
Those who received appointment include acting Chief of Police Mark Magaw; acting Fire Chief Marc Bashoor; acting Chief Administrative Officer Michael Errico; acting Director of Homeland Security Brian Moe; acting Director of Environmental Resources Samuel Wynkoop; acting Director of Human Resources Management Stephanye Maxwell, acting Director of Management and Budget Thomas Himler; acting Director of Finance Gail Francis; and acting Director of Housing and Community Development Betty Hager Francis.
The only appointment of controversy Thursday was that of Betty Hager Francis, the acting Director of Housing and Community Development. District 7 councilmember Karen Toles abstained from voting after expressing “concerns” about being able to reach Francis to talk about issues. “That is completely unacceptable,” she said.
Bradley Frome, an aide to Baker, promised Toles during the meeting that Francis would meet with her.
