Alabama man fatally shot on first day of work at plant

An Alabama man was killed on his first day of work at a tubular products supplier on Wednesday.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office dispatched deputies to the Samuel Associated Tube Group in Pinson, Alabama, early Wednesday morning. There, they found the body of 29-year-old John Eric Cole, who had been shot several times, and 34-year-old suspect Dexter Rashad Walker, also an employee of the plant, was arrested after turning himself in to authorities, according to the Associated Press.

“According to witnesses, both the offender and the victim were employees of the business,” the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a press statement. “This was the victim’s first day on the job. The circumstances surrounding the reason for the shooting are still under investigation.”

In March, Walker accused Cole, his son’s stepfather, of choking the 12-year-old boy and making threats two months earlier, according to court documents.

A judge issued a temporary ordering forcing Cole and the boy’s mother to stay away from Walker, but in July, Walker then asked the judge to dismiss the case due to a belief that the child was no longer in danger, records show.

The Samuel Associated Tube Group told the outlet it is cooperating with the investigation.
