Navy Seahawk helicopter crashes, crew rescued

A U.S. Navy MH-60S Seahawk helicopter crashed Tuesday morning in Virginia’s James River while on a routine training mission, the Navy said.

The three crew members were rescued by a “good Samaritan vessel,” and transported to a Navy hospital in nearby Portsmouth, with injuries that were described as “non-life threatening.”

Local television pictures showed the crew walking and appearing unhurt.

The Seahawk helicopter is the Navy’s version of the Army’s Black Hawk, manufactured by Sikorsky.

It was assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 2, the helicopter training based at Norfolk Naval Station’s Chambers Field.

A full accident investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the mishap.
