Chipotle lovers made to wait in Capitol Hill

Despite lots of support from local residents, the proposed Chipotle on Barracks Row will have to wait another month before the area’s Advisory Neighborhood Commission makes its recommendation on the proposal. The Chipotle would be the first one in a Capitol Hill neighborhood.

A contingent of mostly Seventh Street residents raised concerns to the commission about noise and rodents, which Chipotle representatives tried to assuage. But, as the Eastern Market Metro Community Association blog pointed out, more difficult to assuage was their concern the Chipotle would “open the floodgates” to more fast-food ventures.

According to the blog, Chipotle’s response was that its restaurant genre is “fast casual,” which serves a “different customer” than fast food. Fast casual is an industry term for those in-between establishments like Chipotle that prepare your food quickly but are a step above McDonalds or Burger King.

The ANC voted to postpone its vote until its July 12 meeting.
