Metro: Man fell onto tracks before hit by train

A man hit by a Red Line train at Friendship Heights on Monday afternoon remained in critical but stable condition Tuesday morning, according to Metro.

The 41-year-old Northwest D.C. man was hit by an inbound train around 4 p.m. in what investigators believe was an accidental fall from the platform, said Metro spokesman Dan Stessel. The man, whose name was not released, had to be rescued from underneath the train and the accident tied up service on the line for hours.

It was not immediately clear why the man fell. Stessel said he couldn’t comment due to agency privacy policies on whether a health issue may have prompted the fall.

It is uncommon but not unheard of for riders to fall from the platform. Accidental falls into the trackbed have killed at least four people on the system in just over two years.

Some have been rescued before the train can hit them, though. In April, an elderly couple in their 70s was rescued by fellow riders after falling from a crowded Gallery Place platform.
