Former President Barack Obama is holding an event in the fall for the Democrat running for New Jersey governor, Phil Murphy, the former U.S. ambassador to Germany from 2009-2013.
Obama is also anticipated to host an event for Ralph Northam, the Democrat running for governor against Republican Ed Gillespie. Additionally, Obama is expected to appear at more political events to prepare for the 2018 elections, The Hill reported.
“I think a lot of people are missing his leadership and are looking to him to boost the party’s fundraising numbers,” an Obama donor told The Hill. “I think many people in the party are desperate for his return.”
Additionally, Obama will attend a Democratic National Committee fundraiser the end of September to aid the DNC in filling its coffers and to fund state parties all over the U.S.
However, Obama will not be the primary focus of attention during the DNC fundraiser.
“It’s not in anyone’s interest — including the former president’s, the Democratic Party’s or country’s — for President Obama to become the face of the resistance or to narrate the Trump presidency,” an adviser told The Hill. “That’s why he wants to support the next generation of Democratic leaders establish themselves, build their own profile, and lead our country.”
Obama won Virginia and New Jersey during his presidential campaign. Additionally, he was the first Democrat to win Virginia in 40 years.
