Prince George’s County to dedicate Sept. 11 memorial

As state and county leaders dedicate a park this morning in memory of the 25 county residents who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack, leaders of Prince George’s emergency responders say the county must continue to be alert and cautious.

Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, Prince George’s County Executive Jack Johnson, the heads of the county police, sheriff and fire/EMS departments will attend a 10 a.m. ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial Park in Bladensburg. The park features 25 white crepe myrtles planted along a brick walkway.

County Police Chief Melvin High issued a statement Friday morning saying Prince George’s emergency responders remain vigilant as the anniversary of the attacks approach.

“We’ve reviewed every aspect of our readiness, including our training and planning, as well as our equipment, such as masks and protective gear,” High said in the statement. “Our incident preparedness and management training meets the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) requirements, and we are well-prepared to respond to the safety needs of our community.”
