Trump: Mexico trade deal good for farmers, jobs

President Trump touted the positive effect he claimed the new trade agreement with Mexico will have on farmers and jobs in a Tweet late Tuesday.

“Our new Trade Deal with Mexico focuses on FARMERS, GROWTH for our country, tearing down TRADE BARRIERS, JOBS and having companies continue to POUR BACK INTO OUR COUNTRY,” wrote Trump. “It will be a big hit!”

The revision to the North American Free Trade Agreement, announced Monday, cut Canada out of talks.

Mexico and U.S. officials worked last week and over the weekend to hammer out the bilateral agreement, though current Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, who leaves office Dec. 1, has indicated he would like Canada included in talks going forward.

The agreement seeks a higher percentage of automobiles sold in North America to be made with parts produced on the continent, and increases the proportion of workers making more than $16 per hour, though Trump alluded to other points in Monday’s announcement.

“Mexico’s promised to immediately start purchasing as much farm product as they can,” Trump said during the announcement.
