Metro’s Red Line riders who typically travel between Grosvenor and Friendship Heights stations may want to consider another option for this weekend, plus two more weekends this summer.
The transit agency plans to shut down rail service between Grosvenor, Medical Center, Bethesda and Friendship Heights stations for three weekends, starting Friday night at 10 p.m.
It will do so again the next weekend, July 27-29, and again Aug. 10-12. Free bus shuttles will ferry riders between those stations, leading to an estimated 30-minute delay per trip.
This weekend, Metro also plans to force trains to share a single track in segments on all the remaining lines but the Yellow Line. However, Yellow Line service will still be affected. The work starts at 10 p.m. Friday and runs through Sunday.
Here’s where the work will be:
• Green Line: Trains will share a single track between Fort Totten
and
Prince George’s Plaza. Metro estimates 10-minute delays.
• Yellow Line: The work on the Green Line means that all Yellow Line trains will go no farther north than Mount Vernon Square.
• Orange Line: Trains will share a single track along two parts of the line, between East Falls Church and West Falls Church and between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly.
• Blue Line: Trains will share a single track between the Van Dorn Street and Franconia-Springfield stops. Between 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, every other Blue Line train will end at Van Dorn Street, rather than Franconia-Springfield, meaning 15-minute delays for those using Franconia-Springfield.
