The super political action committee aligned with Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie has released a new ad highlighting his promise to keep Guantanamo Bay open.
In the 30-second ad by America Leads, the New Jersey governor speaks at a campaign event and says he will “keep every rotten dangerous terrorist who is there and never let them go.” Christie then goes on to say that “30 percent of the people the president has released from Guantanamo have gone back in the terrorism business.”
Christie also warns in the ad that Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton would be “just the same as the president on Guantanamo Bay.”
“Any commander in chief who would consider letting any of those people out is betraying the American people,” he concludes.
Throughout his time in office, President Obama has vowed to close the military prison located in Cuba, but has been met with constant opposition. In his year-end news conference in December, he cited Guantanamo Bay as “one of the key magnets for jihadi recruitment” said that his administration will “wait until Congress has said no to a plan with numbers attached to it before we say anything definitive about my executive authority here.”
Christie has been touting his plans to fight terrorism in the weeks since the Paris and San Bernardino, Calif., terror attacks. In a RealClearPolitics average of polls, he trails in fifth place with 4.8 percentage points.
