Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., will serve on the Senate Armed Services Committee in the 115th Congress, he announced Monday.
“As a former lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, I am proud to be carrying on Michigan’s strong military tradition by joining the Senate Armed Services Committee,” Peters said in a statement. “Michigan helped build the Arsenal of Democracy that defeated tyranny in World War II, beginning a defense legacy that stretches into present day as Michigan airmen, soldiers, sailors and Marines are supporting the fight against ISIS.”
Peters was elected to the Senate in 2014 after serving in the House. It wasn’t immediately clear whether Peters is replacing a sitting member.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., is also joining the committee next year as a new member.
