Metro’s troubles are leading to reforms … in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority took steps Thursday to hire an outside consultant to assess the “safety culture” of the bus-centric transit agency, according to the Los Angeles Times.
A board member there specifically cited Metro’s 2009 Fort Totten crash and the subsequent federal investigation into what caused it as the impetus. According to the LAT’s report:
“As a board we must remain committed to this priority and continually strive to improve the safety culture at MTA in a proactive manner, rather than in a reactive manner after suffering a major accident,” county Supervisor and board member Michael D. Antonovich wrote in a motion.
Safety culture has been a popular buzzword at Metro since the crash, with attention paid to how the agency is run and governed all the way up to the board of directors level.
