The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has asked the White House for all documents in its possession that might explain how a White House transcript was edited to remove a key answer about the Iran nuclear agreement.
Last week, ABC News reported that in a May 9 press briefing, White House press secretary Josh Earnest was asked if he could say that no senior official ever lied about the Iran deal.
“No, Kevin,” Earnest replied. However, those two words never made it into the transcript.
On Monday, Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, asked White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough if the edit appears to be “intentional,” and asked for any documents that might explain who made the edit, and all internal back-and-forths that may have occurred when it was made.
It’s similar to the letter Chaffetz sent the State Department after it was discovered that a 2013 press briefing video was edited to exclude a discussion about the Iran deal.
The committee asked for any related documents from the White House by June 20. Read the letter here:
