Kim Kardashian urges Gov. Abbott to pardon Texan mother on death row

Kim Kardashian recently took to Twitter to advocate against the execution of a Texan mother scheduled for April 27.

Melissa Lucio has been on death row for the last 14 years after being convicted for the death of her 2-year-old daughter. Kardashian called the circumstances surrounding the death “a tragic accident” in a tweet Monday.

“[Lucio’s] 2-year old daughter Mariah fell down a flight of stairs and two days later passed away while taking a nap,” Kardashian tweeted. “After she called for help, she was taken into custody by the police.”

“Melissa is a survivor of abuse and domestic violence herself and after being interrogated for hours and falsely pleaded guilty,” she continued. “She wanted the interrogation to end, but police made her words out to be a confession.”

The celebrity went on to call on her 71.9 million followers to sign a petition asking Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to urge him “to stop her execution.”

“It’s stories like Melissa’s that make me speak so loud about the death penalty in general and why it should be banned when innocent people are suffering,” Kardashian wrote.

She included a link to an article that claimed one of Lucio’s jurors felt pressured to convict her but now feels differently.

Abbott’s office did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment. The incumbent governor is currently running for reelection.

This isn’t the first time Kardashian has gotten involved in politics. Kardashian worked with former President Donald Trump to get the First Step Act passed, a piece of legislation that cuts unnecessarily long prison sentences and improves conditions within prisons. Trump signed the bill into law on Dec. 21, 2018.
