Tesla is working on building a humanoid robot meant to help people with everyday tasks.
Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Tesla, revealed the Tesla Bot project on Thursday at his company’s AI Day event.
During a PowerPoint presentation showcasing the idea, he said Tesla’s cars are essentially semi-sentient robots on wheels and that it makes sense to put that technology in a humanoid form.
Musk predicted the robot prototype will weigh 125 pounds, stand 5 feet, 8 inches tall, and be completed sometime next year.
IS THE SELF-DRIVING CAR DOOMED ALREADY
The intention of the robot is to be able to navigate the world without specific instructions and complete certain tasks without being explicitly told, Musk explained. If successful, the robot will eliminate dangerous, boring, and redundant tasks, he added.
“Essentially, the future of physical work will be a choice,” Musk told the audience. “If you want to do it, you can, but you wouldn’t need to.”
Although the idea may bring to mind dangerous robots seen in Hollywood action movies, Musk assured people that humans will be able to outrun and “overpower” the Tesla Bot.

“It’s intended to be friendly and navigate through a world built for humans,” Musk said.
The AI Day presentation also covered inventions that Tesla is working on, including DOJO, an AI training system. The company’s stock went up by 1% the day after AI Day, according to the Nasdaq composite.
