Not Even Chelsea Clinton Is Promoting Her Latest Book

No, Chelsea Clinton’s latest book is not a flop!

Oh, sure, you can read—in suspect right-wing media such as Heat Street—catty articles about Governing Global Health: Who Runs the World and Why, which the former first daughter co-authored with University of Edinburgh global health professor Devi Sridhar. Articles that say things like this:

It currently stands at No. 74,374 on the Amazon Bestsellers Chart. The book profiles global health organizations and the work they do. Chelsea is Vice Chair of the Clinton Foundation which prioritizes improving global health. Published by Oxford University Press, the book is well-intentioned but bland in the extreme. And there is no answer given to the question “Who Runs the World and Why?” Chelsea does however extensively eulogize Bill and Melinda Gates whose foundation has frequently partnered with the Clinton Foundation and substantially donated to various Clinton’s initiatives. “It is clear that the Gates Foundation has played a vital role in global health and can aptly claim credit for saving untold lives,” Chelsea observes…. Weirdly, Chelsea Clinton herself appears disinterested in promoting her book.

Untrue, all of the above!

First of all, Governing Global Health is actually No. 72,389 on Amazon. That’s a big difference!

Furthermore, Governing Global Health has gotten a rave review in the New England Journal of Medicine. Here’s an excerpt:

It reads seamlessly as it places the challenge in historical perspective and makes the case for the critically needed response.

Oh, wait—that’s a review of a different book titled Governing Global Health. That book, a collection of essays edited by Andrew F. Cooper, John J. Kirton, and Ted Schrecker, was published in 2007.

But Chelsea Clinton actually is promoting her book, contrary to what Heat Street says. Here’s an article about a big book tour starting in April that she announced just yesterday, according to CNN:

The paperback tour will kick off in New York on April 4, and includes stops in Madison, Connecticut; Winnetka, Illinois; St. Louis; Menlo Park and San Francisco, California; and Austin, Texas; culminating in Dallas on April 23.

Oops! Wrong Chelsea Clinton book! CNN continues:

“It’s Your World,” which was aimed at a “tween” audience—a 10- to 14-year-old crowd —was released in September 2015. Clinton did a 20-city tour at the time at schools and bookstores across the country.

Still, after much Internet searching, I did find some evidence that someone is promoting Chelsea’s 2017 book, in contrast to her 2015 book. Here’s an announcement for a March 2 event at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health:

Join us for a book launch for Chelsea Clinton and Devi Sridhar’s new book Governing Global Health Who Runs the World and Why? Chelsea and Devi will present a short lecture followed by an audience Q & A. Reception to follow.

Okay! Although Chelsea does happen to be an adjunct professor at the Mailman School—which might explain why the school seems to be the only outfit on earth that cares about her latest tome.
