Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton disappointed Trump plans to hold campaign rally in his city

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton expressed dismay Wednesday that President Trump is planning to hold a campaign rally for supporters in Phoenix next week.

“I am disappointed that President Trump has chosen to hold a campaign rally as our nation is still healing from the tragic events in Charlottesville,” Stanton said in a statement Wednesday.

Stanton said if the purpose for Trump’s visit is to pardon former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the nation will be increasingly divided. Arpaio was recently found guilty of criminal contempt, but Trump has said he would consider pardoning him.

“It is my hope that more sound judgment prevails and that he delays his visit,” Stanton said.

Not long after, Trump tweeted a link to register for the rally, inviting followers to “join me” in Phoenix.

The campaign rally will be held at the Phoenix Convention Center.
