A top-ranking Democratic senator slammed President Trump’s insistence to include funding for a border wall in a must-pass spending bill.
The comments from Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday come as Republicans and Democrats are arguing over what should be in a spending measure that needs to be passed by April 28 to avoid a government shutdown.
“It’s a political stunt, an obsession for our president that should not shut down the government,” Durbin, a member of Senate leadership, said referring to the wall.
But right now the White House doesn’t appear to be budging.
On Friday, Trump’s budget director Mick Mulvaney floated a proposal that linked border wall funding to insurer subsidies for Obamacare. Democrats balked at that proposal.
Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly warned that Trump is willing to shut down the federal government over funding for the U.S.-Mexico border wall.
