Liz Cheney’s biggest donors come from Texas and California

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) far outraised her primary opponent in her reelection fight for Wyoming’s sole House seat, with most of her contributions coming from out of state in Texas or California.

Cheney raised over $15 million in her reelection bid, with nearly $1 million coming from Texas and another $1.4 million from California, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission. That makes the two states her highest contributors, raising only $386,000 from donors in Wyoming.

Much of the out-of-state financial assistance came from high-profile Republican donors, such as former President George W. Bush, who donated $2,900, and his onetime deputy chief of staff Karl Rove, who gave $2,800, according to the FEC filings.

However, Texans didn’t only look to support Cheney in her primary fight. A substantial number of donors also threw their support behind Trump-backed challenger Harriet Hageman, who raised $150,000 from the Lone Star State, according to the Houston Chronicle. Comparatively, Hageman raised $940,000 from Wyoming residents.

Despite outraising her opponent, Cheney is poised to lose her primary battle after eliciting the ire of former President Donald Trump, who maintains a heavy influence over GOP voters. Cheney especially became the underdog in the race after Trump endorsed Hageman last year, calling the incumbent a “warmonger and disloyal Republican.”

Cheney’s chances of being reelected have been particularly rocky ever since she voted to impeach Trump in 2021, joining just nine other House Republicans in doing so. The incumbent’s involvement with the Jan. 6 select committee, on which she serves as vice chairwoman, has further deepened the wedge between her and the Trump wing of the party.

The Wyoming representative has not backed down from her attacks on the former president, releasing an ad featuring her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, claiming, “There has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump.”

Liz Cheney’s political future will be determined after the polls close in Wyoming on Tuesday, where she is likely to be ousted from the seat she has held since 2017. However, the Wyoming Republican’s massive fundraising numbers may hint at her financial network nationwide as she ponders running for a higher office. Cheney has hinted at a presidential run in 2024 but maintains she is still undecided.
