Three arrested at Holland Tunnel with guns, ballistic vests

Three people were arrested Tuesday with multiple guns, rifles and ballistic vests in their van at the Holland Tunnel, which connects Manhattan to New Jersey.

Authorities told NBC 4 New York that two men in their 50s and a woman in her 20s were stopped on the New Jersey side of the tunnel around 8 a.m. Tuesday for driving with a cracked windshield.

A subsequent search of the vehicle found the weapons — which included long-range guns and handguns — ammunitions and vests. A camouflage helmet with what appeared to be night goggles was also seized.

According to law enforcement officials, the three suspects are dubbed “gun enthusiasts,” and are not connected to terror. Though there is no known threat, the Joint Terrorism Task Force is still investigating the trio and gun cache.

Authorities told ABC 7 New York the suspects were in possession of the guns as part of criminal activity, likely heroin related.

The arrest comes a week after a mass shooting in Orlando, Fla., in which the shooter used a Sig Sauer MCX .223-caliber rifle and a Glock 17 9mm semi-automatic pistol. The shooter, Omar Mateen, died in a shootout with police, but not before killing 49 and injuring 53 others.
