RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California lawyer who collected her grandmother’s Social Security payments for 12 years after the woman’s death has been sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison.
Audrey Owens of Upland was sentenced Monday.
Owens was a deputy public defender for Riverside County until she retired last fall.
Authorities say after her grandmother died in 2000, Owens changed the address of a joint account they shared and collected nearly $130,000 in Social Security payments.
She pleaded guilty in March to two counts of theft of government property.
