Just off Route 50 lies an Eastern Shore surprise

St. Michaels: Across the bay, light years away.

A quaint and historic town on the Eastern Shore, St. Michaels is fast becoming a relaxing weekend destination. Just across the Bay Bridge into Talbot County, and off of Route 50, this sleepy little town is a 180-degree turn from the bustle of city life.

This charming maritime village is situated on the south shore of the Miles River, nestled around St. Michaels Harbor. Having derived its name from the Episcopal Parish established there in 1677, it was actually the church that attracted settlers to St. Michaels, those engaging in tobacco farming and ship building.

History abounds in St. Michaels. Debbie Dodson, director of tourism for Talbot County, recommends a visit to the Chesapeake Maritime Museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of traditional Bay boats.

“There are 10 permanent exhibit buildings on 18 acres of waterfront,” she pointed out, “and the 1879 Screw Pile Lighthouse.”

Additionally, Patriot Cruises offers historic, narrated tours along the harbor.

Not just for history buffs, the town offers so much more. Those into shopping and dining will revel in a day trip or weekend getaway.

“We offer fine dining at Bistro St. Michaels and Sherwood?s Landing” Dodson said, adding that St. Michaels Crab and Steak House is a local favorite on the harbor for casual waterfront dining.

Bed and Breakfasts are plentiful in town, offering a stay-over that allows for shopping in the many upscale boutiques along the town’s main drag, Talbot Street. The Victoriana, on the water, enjoys a lot of repeat customers, according to innkeeper, Aida Khalil.

“I came here [from Berlin, Md.] to open a restaurant and instead fell in love with this old house,” she said. “I’ve kept my rates the same as last year so as not to be so much of a crunch on my guests.”

Events, especially in the fall, bring in visitors who discover St. Michaels for the first time and return again and again, especially at Christmas for the many yuletide activities.

“I can’t tell you how many people [have told me], ‘We never realized what was off the road at Route 50.'” Dodson said.
