Rep. Fred Upton has become the latest Republican congressman to say he has no plans to endorse Donald Trump.
“I’m going to stay in my lane,” Upton, the most senior GOP Michigan congressman, told radio station WHTC-AM this week during a discussion about a general election matchup between Trump and Hillary Clinton.
“There’s a lot of things that folks are not happy about with either of these two candidates,” said Upton, who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee. “We’re running our own race, and don’t look for me to endorse anyone in this race probably the rest of the year.”
Upton joins other Michigan GOP lawmakers Justin Amash, Bill Huizenga and John Moolenaar in not endorsing Trump.
Trump has, however, been endorsed by Michigan GOP Reps. Candice Miller, Mike Bishop, Dave Trott, Tim Walberg and Dan Benishek.
Upton, who has been in Congress since 1987, is up for reelection this fall.
“We’ve got a long ways to go, but it seems to a lot of us that the train is off the track,” Upton told WHTC-AM. “We’ll see if he’s able to put it back on the track, I don’t know, but not a lot of happy campers in terms of how this race is proceeding so far.”
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, a Republican, did not endorse a presidential candidate in the Michigan primary and said he will not endorse in the general election either.
