Biden surges past Bernie Sanders in Minnesota

Former Vice President Joe Biden scored a victory in the Minnesota primary on Tuesday by defeating Sen. Bernie Sanders, who won the state by a huge margin four years prior.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s withdrawal from the presidential race on Monday gave Sanders an opportunity to run away with her home state, but Biden won the primary after receiving Klobuchar’s endorsement.

Minnesota awards 75 pledged delegates. Candidates need a total of 1,991 delegates to win the Democratic nomination.

In the 2016 election, when Minnesota held caucuses, Sanders had nearly 62% support, compared to Hillary Clinton’s 38%.

Sanders made the state a priority ahead of Super Tuesday, hosting his final rally before the big voting day in Minnesota.

A recent MPR News/Star Tribune poll had Biden in fourth place, with 8% support, and Sanders in second with 23%. Klobuchar was leading Sanders by 6 percentage points.
