After more than two years of neighbors complaining about foul odors, police in London discovered the remains of a deceased woman in her apartment.
Police discovered the skeletal remains of a 61-year-old woman after several of her neighbors had been complaining about smells coming from her apartment since October 2019, according to the Daily Mail. Upon breaking down the door, police found a woman who was “basically a skeleton” and requested that a neighbor confirm her identity, the neighbor told the outlet.
“It’s disgusting and I’m shocked,” said the neighbor, who had been forced to place a towel under her door in order to get rid of the odor coming from the woman’s apartment. “I didn’t know her very well, but she would sometimes collect my deliveries for me.”

The neighbor continued to say that she had come back from a trip “in September or October 2019” when she became aware of “a horrific stench in the building,” according to the outlet.
As mail began to pile up and the woman owed more and more in rent payments, her neighbors became increasingly more worried, even after there was a forced entry attempt on the apartment in 2020 for a gas check, according to the outlet.
“We repeatedly called the housing association because it was weird – her letter box was full and I could see from the letters she hadn’t been paying rent,” her neighbor said. “I called them up again and said I hadn’t seen this lady and months.”
Police finally broke down the apartment door after a bike was left unattended in front of the woman’s apartment and neighbors filed complaints, according to the outlet.

“Concerns have been raised about the welfare of a woman who lived at the address,” a spokesperson for the London Police Department said, according to the outlet. “Officers attended and forced entry. The body of a 61-year-old woman who was deceased was found inside.”
Police are treating the woman’s death as “unexplained but not suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner,” said the spokesperson, according to the outlet.
