A fight over several of Donald Trump’s cabinet selections is brewing in the Senate before the 115th Congress even convenes, a development that one Democratic senator who is often at odds with his party calls “BS”.
“That’s just bull—,” said West Virginia senator Joe Manchin to Politico in regard to news that several of his colleagues in the minority plan to exact revenge on Republicans for blocking the confirmation process of Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland.
“My God, I think we should have an attorney general in place on Jan. 20. I sure do believe that,” Manchin added. His fellow senator, Jeff Sessions, is Trump’s selection to head the Justice Department and one choice among several of the president-elect’s that multiple Democrats singled out for special scrutiny and possible delay.
Ohio senator Sherrod Brown and California senator Dianne Feinstein were two senators named by Politico who sounded particularly harsh warnings about dragging out the confirmation of Sessions and others. But their party isn’t uniform on holding up the process. The Senate Democrats’ number two, Illinois’s Richard Durbin, said he thinks public service “should be more” than “retribution”.
