Kuwaiti emir seeks strategic partnership with US firms on energy

The leader of Kuwait met with U.S. energy and technology firms in an effort to form a long-term strategic partnership with U.S. companies ahead of a major meeting with President Trump on Wednesday.

Kuwait’s emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, met with top U.S. executives at his private residence in Washington on Tuesday night, according to the country’s official government news service.

The emir told the executives he wishes to build a “strategic relationship” with U.S. firms, as part of the country’s new foreign investment strategy to attract top companies from around the world, according to the Kuwaiti news agency.

One of the first areas of interest is providing “state-of-the-art technology to the oil sector,” according to the emir. Other areas would include renewable energy, information technology and communications.

The meetings were pulled together by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Kuwaiti government, which included 16 CEOs from U.S. companies.

None of the names of firms were disclosed. However, Kuwait did sign agreements for further discussion with Amazon and Microsoft.

In separate meetings with the Trump administration, Kuwaiti officials signed agreements with the Department of Energy to coordinate efforts with the U.S. on nuclear security. Kuwait also agreed to work with the administration on cybersecurity.
