Montana’s Jon Tester, one of the Senate Democrats running for re-election in a deep red state, is receiving assistance from bankers.
The American Bankers Association and Montana Bankers Association announced Wednesday that they are running an ad supporting Tester’s re-election.
“His willingness to work across the aisle to pass common-sense financial regulatory reform in the Senate will help Montana and the rest of the country,” said ABA President Rob Nichols, adding that the group is prepared to support both parties.
Tester, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, is one of the key Democratic backers of bipartisan legislation to ease banking rules on mostly small and regional banks. The bill passed the Senate in March over the strident opposition of liberal Democrats but has since been held up as House lawmakers have sought to add to it.
President Trump won Montana by more than 20 percentage points in 2016, although Tester isn’t regarded as one of the most vulnerable Democrats.
A representative for the American Bankers Association declined to say how much would be spent on the ad, but said that “we certainly expect a lot of Montanans will see the ad.”
