Two service members died Saturday morning in Afghanistan when two people wearing Afghan military uniforms opened fire at a base in the southern part of the country, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization announced Saturday.
According to a statement released by Operation Resolute Support headquarters, the soldiers were killed when two people wearing Afghan National Defense and Security Forces uniforms opened fire. NATO forces returned fire and killed the shooters.
It’s unknown at this point where the two dead soldiers are from. NATO elected to leave the identification process up to their home countries. Fox News reported they are not American.
Afghan and Resolute Support officials are investigating the shooting and more information was not immediately available Saturday afternoon.
“We continue to train, advise and assist the ANDSF, and do not view this incident as representative of the positive relationship between our forces,” NATO stated.
The United States is leading Operation Resolute Support in Afghanistan. The effort aims to train, advise and assist Afghan forces in stabilizing their own country. Approximately 10,000 American troops are in Afghanistan.
